The Pyrosomes, inspiration for my latest aliens in the upcoming 2nd book in the series, The Bokor.

This creature isn't a creature at all but is actually a colony of tiny individuals, zooids, that live together in a gelatinous goo. Besides the fact that they look so awesome and are described as feeling like a soft feather boa, they also light up, are luminescent, one beginning and then others follow-hence the Borg concept. They are tubes, some growing up to 60 feet in length.  A quote from the biologist, T.H. Huxley in 1849:
I have just watched the moon set in all her glory, and looked at those lesser moons, the beautiful Pyrosoma, shining like white-hot cylinders in the water.
Finding this wonderful, harmless creature has led me to create a connected colony of aliens who live in the mists, winds, and sea. (New in the 2nd book of the series, The Bokor.) More great info here.
